Have you ever had a really beautiful moment, right before you knew something bad was probably about to happen? So here I am falling in love with an incredible person, wondering if it’s just summer love. I’m in my late twenties, and I’ve had my fair share of relationshits……I mean it was all worth it but you know what I mean. I wouldn’t say I’m ready to get married, but I’d also rather just stay single if a guy is in it for the wrong reasons. It’s midway through September = perfect time for hurricanes and also perfect timing for change and/or breakups. But this man feels different in a way I’ve never felt before. And so I eat up those last weeks of summer, not worrying about the future.
Hurricane Florence had all of Charleston boarding and sandbagging their houses, questioning whether to pack up and get the F out. The day before we headed inland, we had spent a desolate day on the beach at Sullivan’s Island. On the way we had picked up pizza, where the teenagers serving us had learned that school would be cancelled the following days due to a mandatory evacuation made by the mayor. (So this is what snow days in the south are like?!) After having a pizza picnic on the sand, we headed into the surf to cool off…for an entire 5 minutes. The surf was already being influenced by hurricane Florence which was still a day away AKA the ocean was more alive than I’ve ever felt, in a scary way. So instead of continuing to swim in the death water, we opted to lay on the beach and Spotify every song we possibly could about hurricanes. No contest, our favorite of course was “Hurricane,” by Band of Heathens (give it a listen).
So, “the cane is hers.” As you may know, as predictable as hurricanes may seem, sometimes they come in days sooner than expected or a category 2 can turn into a category 4 in the blink of an eye. Because that whole crazy love thing was happening when I took this photo, this name came to me as if I was taking full ownership of my vulnerability, like this effing hurricane is mine. This love is mine, whether it turns out as predicted or not. Whether our love lives or gets destroyed!! (For the record, we are still going strong…)
